If you have plans that involve traveling in your car expect the roads to be more congested than normal.

According to AAA, the congestion comes as people head home after Christmas and travel to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) recommends before you leave your house to check your route to see if there are in crashes, road work, lane closures, or any other event that could impact travel times and safety. ALGO Traffic provides real-time updates on detours and crashes to help you plan your trips. ALGO also has live stream traffic cameras in some areas to give users anticipated travel times, and the average speed of drivers.

As temperatures drop, and ALEA recommends drivers have a winter safety kit in their car.

“It does get cold in Alabama, so make sure that you have a blanket, a couple of bottles of water, a charged cell phone and a cell phone charger as well,” Cpl. Reginal King said.

The Ashby family traveled to Tuscaloosa from Nashville, Tennessee. They started their trip by making sure their family felt comfortable during the car ride.

“They need their pillows, their blankets, their AirPods, their phones,” Brad Ashby said.

If you want to avoid traffic, AAA recommends leaving before noon, or after 7 p.m., when fewer drivers are on the road.

If you are headed out of town or back home, using some of these tips could help you arrive to your destination safely.
